Abolish the Pork Barrel

I came to learn of the movement To Abolish the Pork Barrel from a very credible person today, Sunday, December 7, 2014. The person I am referring to is a parish priest in the Diocese of Novaliches (Most Rev. Antonio R. Tobias, DD is the current bishop).

The parish priest is so convincing, I am inspired to write this post to help in spreading the word about the movement.

The movement is proposing to institute a law entitled "An Act Abolishing the Pork Barrel System" through a People's Initiative as provided by the Constitution and R.A.6735. This overrides the law-making function of Congress.

In order for this to actually happen, a petition should be submitted to COMELEC backed by signatures comprising "twelve per centum (12%) of the total number of registered voters as signatories, of which every legislative district must be represented by at least three per centum (3%) of the registered voters therein" (cf. Section 5b, R.A.6735) for COMELEC to conduct a referendum where the whole voting population will approve or reject the proposed law.

I also received a copy of the flyer (in Filipino text). I am enclosing here a scanned copy of the flyer.

I think this is a very creative step towards reducing graft and corruption in government. This could also be a major step in revamping the mind-set of politicians when pursuing a position in Congress and in the Executive Branch. Right now, politicians aspire for a post in the Legislative and Executive Branches in order to enrich themselves through the pork barrel.
